Age Discrimination Act : Coming into force in Great Britain
“Specialized store looking to hire dynamic manager with 8 years’ experience,” or “Engineering company seeking programming analyst under 30.” As of October 1, these kinds of ads are no longer legal in Great Britain, in compliance with the transposition of European Directive 2000/78/CE voted in 2000. The Act falls under the framework of the European directive combating discrimination on the grounds of age, religion, disability, or sexual orientation as regards employment and occupation.
It’s an important date for all British heads of human resources, because it means that British employees will from now on be able to bring claims if it can be proved that they have missed out on recruitment or promotion opportunities because of ageism.
The dates of birth on on-line application forms, and graduation dates and beginning of hiring contract dates on CVs are therefore eliminated, right from the applicant pre-selection stage. Most large businesses have equipped themselves with computerized human resource management tools to assist in incorporating these changes in their recruiting process.
