It takes a whole team of dedicated legal professionals working behind the scenes to help Shopify create a platform that makes commerce better for everyone. Our Legal Team must be able to apply their knowledge and experience to novel and unprecedented scenarios, in ways that allow Shopify's business to stay agile and competitive.
Within the Shopify Legal Team, the Product Legal Team counsels the business units responsible for developing and building Shopify's products and services. We provide legal support on new products across different verticals. Our work is challenging, varied, and constantly evolving.
About You
We're looking for a strategic, passionate, and dedicated senior product lawyer with deep financial regulatory experience. Our ideal candidate is someone who is excited by the idea of being part of a fast-paced legal team and building deep relationships with Shopify's Product teams.

Responsibilities
Integrate with a diverse Legal Team responsible for product counseling in connection with Shopify's financial product offerings
Advise clients and key stakeholders on complex legal issues, marketing and operational matters, and business strategy; and manage/assess risk in connection with the products you support
Proactively manage large-scale projects and 'go to market' launches with long-term goals
Identify and manage cross-functional strategic initiatives related to products you support
Build positive and highly collaborative relationships across Legal Teams at Shopify, including our Commercial Services, Regulatory, Compliance, Privacy, Litigation, Intellectual Property and Trust & Safety teams
Advise on the product-impacting aspects of commercial negotiations with strategic partners
Qualifications
A J.D. or L.L.B. with a license to practice law in the United States or in Canada
Multiple years of relevant legal experience in a law firm or in-house legal department
Substantial experience counseling Product teams on financial regulatory matters, with a focus on payments and/or lending products in the fintech space, as well as privacy, consumer protection, and compliance matters
Proven ability to create strategy and vision, as well as manage the execution of work
Exceptional business judgment, analytical thinking, problem-solving and relationship-building skills
Comfort with ambiguity in a fast paced-environment. We are looking for someone who can collaborate across multiple areas in order to achieve common organizational objectives
Capability to work with all levels of different stakeholders, both cross-functionally and globally
Demonstrated team player, who has had success both leading and participating in cross-functional teams or managed projects
Experience managing external legal counsel, including in multiple international markets
Experience working in a high growth organization looking to scale and build
Additional Qualifications
Experience counseling business and compliance teams on US money transmitter licensing issues, and on issues arising from operating as a payment facilitator
Experience advising on the launch of financial products in multiple international markets
