The General Counsel portfolio is expanding and is excited to be recruiting for legal professionals who will support its mandate to: (i) proactively and efficiently manage the legal affairs of the organization, (ii) provide advice with respect to legal issues, regulatory and statutory compliance, and (iii) ensure the integrity and effective governance of the organization.


Position Summary

HHS is seeking talented Legal Counsel to join its growing and respected Legal Services Team. Reporting to the Director of Legal Services, Legal Counsel will have the opportunity to make a demonstrable impact and provide advice on a variety of clinical and corporate matters.  The ideal candidates will have experience in health law and ideally corporate law within a public hospital setting and a good understanding of Ontario’s privacy regime.

Responsibilities on the Legal Services Team include:

  • Provide legal advice and information to clinical teams and administrators pertaining to compliance, health law, and privacy;
  • Support various stakeholders throughout HHS, including patient experience, privacy, patient safety, and medical affairs;
  • Advise on healthcare professional matters;
  • Assessing liabilities and providing legal risk management advice to various stakeholders across the organization;
  • Collaborating with other departments within the organization on complex and multidisciplinary matters and providing legal recommendations;
  • Ensuring compliance with workplace legislation and regulations;
  • Managing complex legal files relating to health law and risk management;
  • Preparing legal research memoranda in the areas of health law and privacy law;
  • Drafting and reviewing agreements and memoranda of understanding;
  • Advise on the rollout of regulatory changes in the healthcare sector;
  • Support policy development, review and implementation as well as identifying policy and process gaps within the organization;
  • Assist with the management of external counsel relationships and claims; and
  • Cultivate strong stakeholder relationships.


Schedule Work Hours

Monday to Friday; days

This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work arrangement, in accordance with HHS “Remote Work Policy”


Qualifications

  • Law Degree (LLB) from a recognized law school
  • Call to the Ontario Bar (Lawyer Licensed to Practice in Ontario)
  • Minimum 2 years of related legal experience
  • Working experience in the healthcare sector and knowledge of public hospitals is essential
  • Knowledge of Health Law and Privacy regulatory frameworks an asset
  • Demonstrated initiative, independent thinking, conflict resolution and creative problem solving skills
  • Effective collaboration and team work, demonstrated professionalism and tact
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Superior communication skills – written, verbal, presentation
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent judgment, tact and diplomacy
  • High level of integrity and trust

Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.
