Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.

Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.
Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.

The Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division, Office of the Director of Crown Operation for the East Region offers a challenging opportunity for an experienced lawyer to act as an Assistant Crown Attorney under the Dangerous Offender/Long-Term Offender Initiative. In this position, you will take a senior, specialized role to assist in the administration of justice in High-Risk Offender criminal matters and perform related prosecutorial and administrative duties.

The incumbent will report directly to the Director of Crown Operations, East Region.
The position is based in Ottawa with service provided to all of the East Region as required.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Duties Will Include:

• Providing legal and strategic analysis and advice, information and related services (i.e. research, opinions, Attorney
General Consents, Dangerous Offender Applications, Freedom Of Information requests, etc.) on matters affecting the
region
• Ensuring effective case Management and Jordan timeline strategies are carried out in the region
•Acting as Regional Coordinator for High Risk Offender Prosecutions
Prosecuting (or assisting in prosecutions) of High-Risk offences and others, pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC) and other statutes at all levels of Court, and specifically Ontario Court of Justice and Supreme Court of Justice,
with or without a jury
•Keeping informed on office/regional/divisional/provincial initiatives, protocols and directives and implementing them to ensure consistent practices within the justice system, e.g. High-Risk Offender National Flagging System, Dangerous/Long-Term Offender Directive, ISVCBT (Intensive Serious Violent Crime Bail Team), Justice Modernization, Case Management Protocol, etc.
•Preparing correspondence/briefing notes on behalf of the Regional Director/Deputy Director, Assistant Deputy Minister and Deputy Minister and Attorney General
• Responding to requests from the public
• Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with all members of the organization and other participants in
the justice system to support regional, divisional and ministry goals and to support the administration of justice
•Travelling as requested to other court locations to prosecute and support the prosecution teams across the East Region (Belleville, Brockville, Cornwall, Kingston, L'Orignal, Napanee, Ottawa, Pembroke, Perth and Picton

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Legal Experience

• Demonstrated knowledge, experience and expertise in conducting prosecutions, on behalf of the Attorney General, in the Ontario Court of Justice(Criminal, Youth Court, Provincial Offences Court, Bail Court , including Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) Court] and the Superior Court of Justice
• Experience in prosecutions of a serious and complex nature, at all levels of courts, including jury trials
• Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal law procedures, rules of evidence and case law
• Knowledge of the role and function of a prosecutor in the criminal justice system in Ontario
• Demonstrated experience, ability and interest to work on CLD projects and various initiatives
• Experience in case management duties to support the efficient prosecution of criminal matters (e.g. screening, disclosure and resolution meetings)
• Demonstrated attributes and experience in working in a self-directed environment
• Advanced skills and experience in conducting legal research and in drafting legal materials.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

• Demonstrated judgment and analytical ability to determine appropriate legal remedies
• Demonstrated exceptional, interpersonal, presentation and communication skills
• Ability to work as part of a team within the criminal justice system and with community stakeholders.

Computer Skills

• Technical skills to work effectively with computer technology and databases made available to professional staff.
