The Criminal Senior Counsel Bail Specialist will focus on bringing bail reviews and prerogative relief applications identified by Duty Counsel at the Superior Court of Justice, and on assisting unrepresented individuals with Myers detention reviews where appropriate. The Criminal Senior Counsel Bail Specialist will work closely with Duty Counsel to identify matters where a review of a detention order or release conditions is necessary, and the individual does not have private counsel representation for the review. The Criminal Senior Counsel Bail Specialist will also be prepared to bring habeas corpus applications where bail hearings are delayed due to scheduling and other systemic issues.

While the primary focus of this role will be on applications in the Superior Court of Justice, the Criminal Senior Counsel Bail Specialist may also be required to provide support to Duty Counsel dealing with exceptionally lengthy or complex bail hearings and scheduled Special Bail Hearings, and will also mentor and coach Duty Counsel in specialized or complex bail proceedings throughout the District.

As a member of the Criminal Senior Counsel Program, the Bail Specialist may also carry a small caseload of trial matters as needed to support their work, and will perform other tasks within the mandate of the Criminal Senior Counsel Program as required.

This role will complement LAO's existing mixed model of private bar and Duty Counsel services by ensuring that clients who do not have private bar representation but require a bail-related application to the Superior Court receive timely representation.
