In this role, you will be a key player in implementing the firm’s business development initiatives, working with senior management and the BD team. Using the skills and experience gained from your legal practice, you will work closely with our lawyers to craft persuasive client pitches and innovative pricing solutions that reflect our clients’ needs and priorities.

This is a 14-month contract position to cover a leave of absence on the team. You will enjoy our competitive health and dental benefits package. The role is based out of our Toronto office and will provide support to both our Toronto and Calgary offices. We ask all firm members to attend the office on-site three days a week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with senior management and the larger BD team to develop and execute the firm’s business development strategy, focusing on revenue generation, alignment with client value drivers, firm priorities and budget.
  • Work with lawyers and other BD team members to draft compelling, differentiating proposals and pitch materials, including budgets, fee proposals and pricing for specific mandates and portfolios of work.
  • Execute the planning and delivery of various business development activities and initiatives, including: client presentations, events and CLEs; legal directory and award submissions; business intelligence research, analysis and reporting; participation in industry conferences and associations; KPI tracking and reporting; and content development for client-facing materials, website and other channels.
  • Build effective relationships with partners and associates at the firm, clients, business services partners and business community stakeholders with a view to the development of business opportunities.
  • Identify new business prospects and areas of potential growth at the firm and work with partners to realize such opportunities.
  • Collaborate with various key stakeholders including the marketing and communications team to facilitate the successful implementation of firm, office and practice group strategies.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Law degree and a call to the bar
  • 2-5 years of experience providing legal services in a large law firm - in house experience an asset
  • Entrepreneurial minded with strong analytical, financial and business acumen
  • A solid understanding of the legal industry, the core practice areas in a full-service law firm, and business law
  • Experience undertaking complex legal and/or business projects involving cross-functional and multi-location teams
  • Ability to effectively handle competing demands and timelines
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to pivot and change direction, as needed
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • The ability to influence others with tact and patience
  • Team player who can work effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders
