Location: New York, Full Time On-site, Mid/Senior-Level Experience

Valnet is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to manage and advise on various legal matters, with a particular focus on strategic risk management, legal/regulatory compliance and litigation management, including in the areas of employment law, data privacy, intellectual property, media law and corporate law. In this role, you will act as the Company's regional legal expert, manage litigation files, proactively identify risk areas, and develop and implement pragmatic solutions to minimize the Company's exposure. The Senior Legal Counsel will report to the VP, Legal Affairs. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and business-minded lawyer looking to make a genuine impact as a leader in Valnet's fast-growing New York office.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and analyze regulatory developments in relevant areas, advising the Company on necessary actions.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in all relevant jurisdictions, including with respect to the Company's foreign subsidiaries.
  • Act as the Company's regional legal expert, advising on applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Ensure the Company complies with applicable data privacy legislation, including updating website terms and privacy policies.
  • Conduct risk assessments and provide guidance on mitigating cybersecurity risks.
  • Manage disputes and litigation, including employment, Intellectual Property (IP) and contractual disputes.
  • Identify risk areas, and proactively develop and implement pragmatic solutions to protect the Company while maintaining its competitive edge.
  • Manage the Company's insurance portfolio.
  • Advise on employment related-matters.
  • Assist in developing and updating policies, procedures and guidelines for the Legal Department.
  • Draft, review and negotiate various commercial agreements, including services, licensing and advertising agreements.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Member of the New York Bar in good standing.
  • Minimum of 5 years of legal experience at a reputable law firm and/or in an in-house legal department; experience at both will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in compliance and regulatory matters, data privacy and/or risk management required.
  • Experience managing litigation strongly preferred.
  • Experience in IP, commercial contracts and/or digital media will be considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Team player, with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Business savvy, with management skills.
  • Hardworking and motivated individual who is a self-starter and can work independently.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and balance a variety of requests and mandates in a fast-paced environment.
  • Occasional travel to the Montreal head office will be required.
